Family Rafting on the Tara River
Safe, Fun & Unforgettable Adventure for All Ages
Rafting with children can be one of the most beautiful family experiences on the Tara River — if you choose the right conditions and plan properly.
At Tara Canyon Raft, we highly recommend family rafting, but always depending on water level and weather conditions.
🌊 Water Level – The Key Factor
Water levels on the Tara change throughout the season and directly affect the speed and intensity of the river.
High Water Level (Spring)
❌ Not recommended for young children
The first 4 km from Brštanovica contain the fastest and most dynamic rapids. During high water, this section can be too strong for small children.
- Avoid this section until water levels decrease
- Additional safety guides are recommended if rafting is done before summer
Medium Water Level (Usually July)
✅ Best option for families
July is often the perfect balance:
- Warm summer weather ☀️
- Water is not too fast (safe), not too low (comfortable navigation)
During this period, children can safely start from Brštanovica and fully enjoy the experience.
Low Water Level (August – Early September)
⚠️ Slower, but more technical
- More rocks become visible
- Navigation requires more precision
- Boats are lighter (fewer people), making passage easier
Still suitable, but slightly more physically demanding.
☀️ Choose the Right Weather
For rafting with children, always choose a stable day without heavy rain.
- Smaller children usually don’t paddle
- Rainy conditions can make them feel cold
- Paddling helps maintain body temperature
👉 Always choose properly sized neoprene equipment
❗ Avoid oversized suits — they can hold water and make swimming difficult
Good weather + medium water = perfect family rafting day
👉 Only the most experienced guides should lead boats with children
👉 Tip: Avoid the right-side access road — the dirt road can cause motion sickness in children
🎒 What to Bring for Kids
- Water
- Snacks or sweets
- Sunscreen
- Hats or caps
👉 Ask your guide for an extra dry bag for children’s items
Make sure children are well fed before departure.
The rafting break by the river is usually a highlight:
- Swimming
- Exploring nature
- Relaxing and eating in the canyon
😄 How Do Kids Usually React?
Children are almost always thrilled with rafting.
- Excited and full of adrenaline
- Proud of their adventure
- Pleasantly tired afterward
It’s very common that:
- Kids fall asleep right after lunch 😄
- Some even fall asleep in the boat near the end
That’s usually the best sign they had an amazing day.
💙 More Than Just an Activity
With the right timing and preparation, rafting becomes more than just an adventure.
It becomes a family memory — something children will talk about for years.
🌊 Safe. Fun. Unforgettable.
